What do you think about Emily only using Jack's point of view? Do you wish we knew more about what Ma was thinking - her perspective other than what Jack overheard? What about even knowing her name? Do you wish you knew more about Old Nick's perspective or even what ended up happening to him??
I think Emma was a wonderful, very insightful author; I am amazed and how well she was able to tell the story from a 5-year old's perspective. This is a dark, very sad story--I can only imagine what "Ma" had to be thinking...and yes, I would have really liked to know what happened to Old Nick...I know what should have happened to him!!!
ReplyDeleteFrom the perspective of Jack I think we were able to find some joy in the story that would have otherwise been only dark. I think when we hear about real life stories of confinement like this we often think from Ma's perspective or an outsiders perspective - how grateful they must be to be out! But Jack's perspective definitely awakened me up to a whole new view. We have to be careful that we realize we have a certain frame on the world that not everyone else uses! Perspective is huge!
ReplyDeleteI kept thinking about how hard it would have been for Ma. To know exactly what was outside that door..she stayed so strong! And I had so much sympathy for both Jack and Ma when they got out. Ma just wanted to be "normal" again. But Jack's normal WAS room. I was sooo glad that Grandma stepped up to the plate. And steppa. I was worried about that at first.
ReplyDeleteDidn't Jack's perspective make you smile? It's kind of sad that he so often wishes he was back in Room...
ReplyDeleteIt was very interesting to read from a five year old perspective. I have to admit though, I did get kind of annoyed when he wouldn't get past things! I do wish we could have read from Ma's perspective at times...
ReplyDeleteHey! We all resist change. Jack knew a single room all his life...the changes we often complain about our miniscule compared to what I think he handled beautifully! Though - it is from his perspective. I wonder if his resistance might have been more dramatic from another point of view. Remember the report that Jack lashed out at the camera's or something and Jack tells it as though he is just moving the blanket off of his head again? Perspective is so much!
