End of the Novel Question!

At the end of the novel, Jacob exclaims:  "So what if I'm ninety-three?...why the heck shouldn't I run away with the circus?"  (page 331).  What would you project the elderly Jacobs experiences after he runs away with the circus the second time How does his decision reflect what we have learned about his early years?

  1. Okay, I finished the book today during my lunch hour...I totally loved this book! The way it ended just made me smile! Jacob "ran" off and once again joined a circus! What a wonderful friend Charlie turned out to be! And, what the heck was he thinking?

I think that the individuals who worked on a circus, truly became "family." Whether or not this was a functional or dysfunction family would, of course, be an interesting discussion! Of course, my vote would say the circus families are exceptionally dysfunctional...but the family members are pretty loyal to one another in some ways and you can't trust them in other ways! Thoughts????

  2. I thought the book was okay. I like that Jacob runs off with the circus as well - who says old people have to hang out in a home until they die?? Why not have fun until you die?! Definitely dysfunctional, but what family isn't? All families have functionality and "dysfunctionality"...heck, some might argue that the dysfunction holds the good family patterns in place! The dysfunction serves a purpose for each member of the family.

  3. What if it was all a metaphor, there was no circus, and Jacob didn't run off with the circus physically, but just in his mind. :)

  4. I finished the book last night and loved it. Descriptive enough and in the style I appreciate and am drawn into mentally. The sexually explicit parts were unpleasant, but that same style of creating a very thorough "movie in mind" just enough to fulfill my imagination worked perfectly in every other part. The storyline, characters, their relationships with one another, the setting were all very unique. Throughout the story I was not able to easily predict what was going to happen next, which I also love. And absolutely, why in the world would Jacob not take the opportunity to live out the rest of his life in such an atmosphere that brought him all of those powerful experiences and emotions? And with nothing really to lose or let go of? I thought the ending was fantastic. I can't wait to see the movie!
