Just Finished Chapter 1!

Okay--here are my thoughts of Chapter 1.  I love this Jacob guy...I want to be just like him when I am 90 or 93, as I'm not sure how old he is at this point, as it seems he doesn't know either...I have no idea what this book is about at this point or where the story will lead...

Did anyone else have to look up the words:  tchotchke and vacuous???? When I looked "tchotchke" up on merriamwebster.com, I was asked to comment on why I was looking up the word--I commented, and I think I might now be famous! J/K!

  1. I must have missed vacuous - repressed it or skipped it :) Tchotchke I have heard used - but normally someone is calling someone else a "tchotchke." You crack me up mom - love you!

  2. I've read the whole book so maybe I'm a bit biased and this isn't fair... but I am NOT a fan of Jacob. I feel like he is very selfish. And I thought his character was selfish both old and young.

  3. At this point (just having finished Chapter 4), I can't tell if Jacob is selfish or just plain lacking common sense and intelligence...

  4. Do you think his friends would have reported him as a missing person? He did just kind of walk off into the sunset...

  5. They probably all just figured her needed time to himself...who knows?? Apparently he didn't have any super close friends.
I don't know that he was selfish as a young man so much as naive. He was an only child and had everything going for him - and then it all fell apart. He never really had to make any big decisions or figure out a path for himself - it was just always there. I will have to say that he resisted his own desires for M until she hinted at returning them. And he always felt guilty about those feelings...until he learned how horrible A was... I don't know that selfish is what Jacob was....
