I would get a piece of paper and write down every possible number combination there is. Then, all day long I would try each number combination until I got the right one. Shoot, I think I could try them all in less than 7 years. If it was a normal keypad - 10 numbers, that's 10 to the 10th power, right? 10 million? I could do that. :)
Wow Amber! Now that is a good idea...I can't think of even one single escape plan... :( I don't think I could ever use one of my children, though, in the way that Ma did, even though the end result was so great! I would have been too scared that something would have happened to my child.
I like Amber's plan! It would be hard to let your child do that...but I doubt Old Nick was going to allow an adult male to live there...two people there ready to overpower him...too much of a risk. Something had to happen!
Definitely something had to happen! Good point Sarah - it was only a matter of time before Old Nick "got rid of" Jack... one way or another. I can't imagine how hard it would have been for Ma to let Jack go, but I think in her heart of hearts, she KNEW she had to get Jack out of there and that Jack was her only chance at escape.
I think that I would do as Amber said - try to find the combination. I would think that the keypad would show some wear on the numbers used most often after a time which would drastically reduce the possible combinations. Some keypads also have tones associated with them, so maybe she could have memorized the tones?
I would have been afraid to send my child with Nick since who knows if he would have done what she asked - to take him to a place far away. He could have just told her that and then bury him somewhere in the yard....
